ImageHI-Performance Soccer Academy strongly believes that one of the keys to developing strong technical and tactical soccer proficiency is to play soccer year round. For this reason HPSA has always worked to ensure HPSA trained teams and players have the opportunity to train during the winter. The goal of our winter program is to develop and enhance each player’s individual dribbling, passing, and receiving skills through creative training and focused repetition. The Directors of HPSA have used their extensive experience in the USA and in Europe to develop a European Training model to improve each individual player's technique in all areas of the game.

HP Soccer is delighted to announce our continuing partnership with NOVA Community College (Annandale, VA) and Olympus Athletic Club (Chantilly, VA). Our relationship allows us the use of their outstanding indoor training facilities for the winter months. HP Soccer Academy continues to offer Winter Training opportunities for all age groups, skill levels, and genders. We are delighted that these facilities continue to help us facilitate our Year Round Training Program.

In addition, HP Soccer Academy will shortly be announcing additional indoor and outdoor training locations for our weekday Winter Programs. We will send out e-mail updates for these programs.

HPSA welcomes individual players to join one of our winter training sessions. We also welcome teams, or partial team groups, to our winter training and will work with Coaches and/or team managers to recommend drills focused on specific team needs.

Why Indoor Skills Sessions Instead of Indoor League Play?

HPSA’s indoor practice sessions are designed to give players thousands of valuable touches on the ball over a 7 or 8 week period. The difference between training and playing (in a winter league) is that players get more time on the ball when training. This is the single most important point when we are developing young players. The HPSA indoor skills program will improve the technical skills of each player within a competitive, learning environment.

The goal of the indoor training program is to develop and enhance each player's individual dribbling, passing, and receiving skills through creative training and focused repetition.

In league play, assuming a player plays for a total of 30 minutes during the game, during those 30 minutes it is estimated they will touch the ball 30/40 times. For an hour at Indoor Training, they will touch the ball at least 300/400 times.

We do understand that there are things in a game that cannot be replicated in technical drills, such as the mental side of playing in a game, the competition, the thrill of playing indoor soccer etc. etc. But for sheer player development, indoor training is highly recommended for Spring preparation. Indoor soccer is fun, and is excellent for endurance - but the indoor skills do not easily translate to the outdoor field environment. Thus the HPSA encouragement to all soccer teams and players to emphasize winter skills training over league play if a player can only do one. In actual fact most HPSA teams elect to play indoor league play in November/December, and indoor skills training in January/February.

The specific curriculum that will be followed during the one hour sessions include 45 minutes of technical training. Drills include emphasis on receiving with all surfaces (inside/outside/laces of left and right foot, thigh, chest, head), turning using all surfaces (sole/inside/outside of foot, thigh, chest, head), dribbling using all surfaces of foot (inside/outside/laces)), passing (inside/outside/laces), volleying/half volleying (inside/outside/laces). The amount of time spent on each of these drills, and approach taken will vary significantly by age group. The last 15 minutes of each one hour session will be spent in small sided (1v1, 2v2,3v3) play.

HPSA Winter Program Descriptions:

TRAVEL TEAMS and TRAVEL PLAYERS:

Our travel skills program focuses on improving the technical skills of each player with emphasis placed upon technical foot skills. All players will learn how to approach and perform throughout a training session: attitude, mental preparation, high level of concentration, and soccer- related strength, coordination, and agility exercises.

The following areas are emphasized during winter skills sessions:

  •     Receiving the ball
  •     Dribbling Techniques
  •     One on one & moves
  •     Quick foot work
  •     Passing with Precision
  •     Wall pass & Overlap
  •     Anticipating plays

HIGH SCHOOL SPRING TRYOUT PREPARATION:

Many of our U15/16 players are facing spring soccer tryouts and the team selection process for varsity and junior varsity teams. Our emphasis with these players is first and foremost to build their confidence level and to ensure they enter the tryout field prepared mentally and physically. Our second goal is to work to develop their technical foot skills in areas of particular importance to high school soccer coaches. The following areas are emphasized during winter skills sessions:

  •     Performing under pressure
  •     Advanced technical drills
  •     Improving tactical decision making
  •     Physical endurance

U8 PREPARATION FOR TRAVEL TEAM PLAY

This program is designed specifically for players who are considering playing travel soccer at U9 level. This training will focus primarily on technical skill development and tactical awareness. This is an excellent opportunity for U8 players to get an idea of what Travel Level Training looks like in a less pressurized environment. It will also allow parents to see if their child is ready for the challenges and demands of travel soccer.

During this program, players will be challenged in the following areas:

  •     Dribbling skills
  •     Passing precision
  •     Receiving the ball
  •     Agility with the ball
  •     Tactical Awareness
  •     Mental Preparedness

RECREATIONAL (U6-U10) and SFL (U11-U14) Training:

These programs are designed for players who are looking for additional technical skills training, but in an environment which is less competitive and less pressured than our travel training. The training program is age group appropriate. Through quality instruction and the creation of a fun and competitive environment, each player will emerge from the training with a greater love and understanding of the game of soccer. This training is HIGHLY encouraged for ALL House/SFL players desiring to improve their skills. There is no better way to improve at the game than by obtaining an increased number of touches on a ball.

The following areas are emphasized during winter skills sessions:

  •     Dribbling skills
  •     Passing precision
  •     Receiving the ball
  •     Agility with the ball

LITTLE KICKERS (3 ½ to 6 year olds):

Pure fun and play with a soccer ball for the very youngest of our developing players - those in the 3 ½ - 6 age range. This session is held on one side of the gymnasium while the Recreational and SFL session is held on the other side – so siblings are able to get some exercise and improve coordination skills when moving with a ball. The only emphasis area for these young players is pure enjoyment of learning the fun of moving with the ball. These sessions are run by trainers that specialize in this age group.
